It's officially landed, the beer list for the 40th Warwick University Real Ale Society!
There are some great beers on the list, from old favourites like Hung Drawn N' Portered to beers that are new for this year such as Octohop. And let's not forget the great range of of society collaborations made with the help of some truly excellent local breweries that will be available exclusively at the festival 14th-16th February while stocks last. Cider, fruit wine, and international beer lists are also attached. Say hello to our beautiful new posters for the 40th Warwick University Real Ale Festival - get ready to see these shared all round our social media, on every wall on campus (and quite often on the floors), as well as around the local area. The 40th Warwick University Real Ale Festival runs from the 14th-16th February in the Copper Rooms at the Warwick SU. Join the Facebook event for updates or visit the festival pages to find out more.
We are happy to announce the winners of our first ever real ale festival awards. Dark Beer of the Festival: Little Critters, Hazelnut Milk Stout. 6% Available on E bar at the front of the room. This stout smells amazing and tastes even better, we're nuts for it! Session Beer of the Festival: Salopian, Darwin's Origin. 4.3% Available on H bar if you're looking for an interesting bitter this is the one to go for. Brewed with four different hops it is as complex as it is delicious. Pale Beer of the Festival: Wild Weather, King Street Pale. 4,2% Available on J bar at the back of the room. Described as an honest pale ale, it's as fruity as it is fantastic, we love this beer and are sure you will too. Server's Choice: Langham, Aegir. 7.5% Available on E bar. This year we polled our servers for their favourite beer and this was by far the most popular choice. It's a Smoked Baltic Porter that lives up to the style, it smells like autumn nights around a bonfire and tastes rich, deep, and delicious. All the beers at our festival are fantastic but here we just wanted to highlight a few of our favourites. Come along tonight to ensure you get a pint because these are sure to go quickly! Warwick University Real Ale Festival, Thursday 15th to Saturday 17th from 6pm in the Copper Rooms. With only one day to go until the festival we have a few updates to announce to the beer lists.
Dhillon's Fair Lady will be replaced with a festival special, Wicked Soup: AMERICAN PIEnapple. Also available is Wicked Soup: Framboizz, both are variations on an IPA with different fruit flavours for you to compare. Both were brewed in association with the society with consolation from Filipe Pascoa our very talented brewer. Framework Sinker Stout will be replacing Double Brown Ale and Lemming will unfortunately be absent although look out for them in the coming years - they are a local brewery to watch. Pershore's Croft and Oh Betty have been exchanged for the mighty Winter Warrior and Solstice Gold. Totally Brewed Papa Jangles Voodoo Stout is unfortunately absent but is replaced by Shakespeare's Othello which will be performed on back bar on request. Summer Wine Resistance Mild and Tenby Black Flag made way for Twisted Barrel's Sine Qua Non and Silhill Hop Star. The new and improved international beer list is as follows:
The Keg list, Cider list, and Fruit Wine list remains unchanged. Come along to the festival to get these, and many other fantastic beers. Open from 6pm Thursday 15th to Saturday 17th, in the Copper Rooms at the Warwick SU. This year we are proud to bring you, for the first time at a Warwick Real Ale Festival, the incredible, the amazing, Twisted Barrel Keg Bar!
What is this wonder of the modern age you ask? A bar featuring 4 of the best Twisted Barrel beers in key kegs. We will be bringing you Holiday '95 California, Doom of Valyria, Dark Night Rises (not to be confused with the Christopher Nolan film the Dark Knight Rises which will not be available), and Beverly CRUSHer. Beers will be available in limited supply while stocks last with rolling availability on Thursday and Friday, keep an eye on our Facebook page to see what is available. Key kegs, unlike traditional kegs work by applying pressure to the bag so the flavour of the beer remains unchanged. They are continuing to become more popular in the real ale and craft beer communities with many breweries opting to switch. This means there are many exciting beers only available on key keg which is why this year we have decided to trial a keg bar with one of the best breweries around. Whether you're an ale purist, or new to the stuff, keep an open mind and give these beers a go. With the amazing selection on offer, you'd have to be mad not to give it a chance. This year we are reprising our relationship with Lilley's to bring you a fully stocked (35 different types!) cider bar with the always popular Mango Cider as well as Rum Cask, Lemon and Ginger, and Apple and Pear. There's something for everyone.
Cider is the perfect accompaniment to the delicious hog roast, supplied by Lazy Pig (vegetarian options are also available). We will also have the largest selection of fruit wines this side of Cardiff featuring flavours such as Nettle, Ginger, Sloe, and Elderberry as well as 4 different types of mead. If this has got you in the mood to try something new, make your way into Rouge Bar and you will not be disappointed! One Wednesday last week, we made our way over into Cov for the very exciting task (honour) of brewing our very own festival beer with one of the best breweries around - Twisted Barrel.
In their fabulous brand spanking new tap room and brewery we met the lovely assistant brewer Aran who talked us through the process and taught us several fun words such as 'sparging' and 'wort' (not as gross as you're thinking). We then spent a relaxing morning-afternoon preparing what will almost certainly be the beer of the festival, and, once the tap room opened, sampling some of Twisted Barrel's brews, including a mango sour and a dry hopped sour. It turns out a large part of brewing is sitting around waiting for things to cool, which suited us just fine. We eventually tore ourselves away leaving the remaining work in the very trustworthy hands of Aran. If you want to see what we created, come along to the festival - probably on the Thursday night (15th) if you want to avoid disappointment because it is sure to sell out quickly! It's finally term 2 and you know what that means? No, not copious deadlines, the Warwick University Real Ale Festival is imminent! Get your drinking shoes on because come Thursday of week 6 the finest event of the university calendar will arrived.
From 6-late on the 15th-17th February in the Copper Rooms we will be toasting away those winter blues with the finest selection of beer in the midlands. Come on down for 120 beers, 50+ fruit wines and ciders, and our wonderful selection of international bottle beers. We are once again collaborating with the fantastic Twisted Barrel brewery in Coventry to make our very own, very exciting, beer along with some TBA collaborations with other local breweries.
